Dear friends and family,
I am writing this to inform you of some awesome changes in my life! About one year ago right out of high school, I heard that my home church, Valley Family Church (VFC) in Kalamazoo, MI had an intense discipleship program for college students called EPIC Commission (EC.) EC is a two year discipleship program for 18-24 year olds that empowers students to be the leaders and world changers of this generation. EC is a mix of many things including: Bible classes, mentorship, spiritual growth, internship and hands on ministry opportunity. I’ve spent this past year growing in character, spiritually and intellectually as I’ve dedicated my time and hard work to this program, school, work and the Lord.
Now that I’ve finished my first year of EC, I’m astounded by all the growth I’ve experienced in my life. I’ve learned how to have effective relationships with the people around me and experienced a family atmosphere with the 3 other housemates I’ve lived with this past year. I’ve grown spiritually and emotionally through EC prayer, classes and mentorship with the guidance of awesome leaders. I’ve grown in my love and knowledge for the Word through attending EPIC School of Leadership every Sunday night, a program that equips Christian leaders for the local church with Bible courses and spiritual leadership training. Not only have I grown through EC classes and EPIC School of Leadership, but I’ve also attended Western Michigan University full time. I’ve learned the importance of people and reaching the lost as I went on a missions trip to Panama City Beach, FL during Spring Break and provided free van rides and breakfasts. I’ve learned the importance of humility and serving through volunteering in kids ministry on weekends, and interning under Family Ministries multiple times a week for the majority of my time in EC. After much hard work and dedication, my internship later lead to me coming on staff at VFC, where I am now the Programming Coordinator and Creative Arts Support Assistant (long title, I know.)
After a year of EPIC Commission, EPIC School of Leadership, WMU, interning, working at VFC and serving on the weekends - I’m ready to do it again. The first year of EC is all about growing personally in your relationship with the Lord. The second year of EC is all about leadership. As a second year student I will be stretched and grow in ways that I’ve never imagined. This next year I’ll have many leadership and discipleship opportunities as I receive leadership training, hands on internship experiences, attend leadership classes all while continuing in spiritual growth through prayer, Bible classes, and ministry training. I’ll be given an opportunity to lead my peers by being an authority in the home, setting an example in life, giving insight and guidance, helping to resolve conflict, and keeping students accountable to program rules. The second year program will help me learn to lead the same way that Christ modeled for all of us, through servant leadership.
To help pay for the program I’m working part time at Valley Family Church, but that’s not enough to cover all of my financial needs. I am writing you this letter, asking you to consider supporting me as I go through this discipleship program. To give you an idea of my needs for the next year, here’s the breakdown:
EPIC Commission Costs:
Housing $1989
